Lee Kirksey, M.D., FACS, Board Certified * Fellowship Trained
Dr Kirksey completed his undergraduate and medical school degrees at The Ohio State University. His General Surgery training was completed at the The Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, PA under the guidance of renowned trauma surgeon Charles C. Wolferth Jr. MD. Dr Kirksey’s surgical training was completed with specialized fellowship training in Vascular Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center and New York Mt. Sinai School of Medicine under the tutelage of Bruce J Brener MD and Michael L Marin MD.
Both of these individuals are considered vanguards in the development and evolution of Endovascular Surgery. Dr Marin has been credited with the introduction of Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) to North America by way of Juan Parodi MD of Argentenia, the father of EVAR.
After completing this two year fellowship, Dr Kirksey returned to Philadelphia and joined the teaching faculty of The Graduate Hospital and The Presbytarian Medical Center of The University of Pennsylvania. At the Graduate Hospital he was named Chief of Endovascular Surgery and Director of the Noninvasive Peripheral Vascular Laboratory.
Over the course of his training and in his years of active practice, he has been directly involved in surgical resident education and has contributed to surgical research and literature with numerous papers and presentations. He was voted “Best Surgical Teaching Attending” by the resident housestaff of The Graduate Hospital in consecutive years of 2004-05, 2005-06.
Dr Kirksey is Board Certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Currently, Board Certification in Vascular Surgery requires completion of an Accredited Vascular Surgery Fellowship which is two years additional training beyond a five year General Surgery Program. Additionally, several certifying examinations must be passed following this training to receive this honored distinction. There are many reports in the medical literature suggesting a direct correlation between advanced specialized training, surgical volume and patient outcomes.
In addition to his specialty certification, Dr Kirksey is a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) which means that he has completed certification to perform vascular ultrasound examinations which are commonly the initial test performed in detecting disorders of the blood vessels.
Dr Kirksey performs the full spectrum of vascular care including the diagnosis, medical management and surgical treatment of arterial and venous disorders. He says, “Its important for people to know that I specialize in the treatment of all blood vessels…The medical non surgical management and the surgical treatment.” “I have a strong interest in the ongoing development of less invasive means of treating peripheral vascular disorders. The progress in 2006 is amazing but many more things will be available in the future. It’s very exciting”
