Look and Feel Better Fast After Vein Surgery
You want a treatment that successfully eliminates the problem at its source, but you don't want to undergo invasive surgery that is more uncomfortable and debilitating than the condition itself. The Vein Center specializes in minimally invasive, outpatient procedures for varicose and spider veins. Knowing you want to feel and look better fast, the Institute offers treatments that are just as effective as they are efficient.
"Once the vein was gone, so was the pain!" J. Roberts, Age 35

VNUS Closure™
This procedure is an FDA-approved alternative to the traditional and invasive vein stripping surgery. During the VNUS Closure™, a thin catheter is guided using ultrasound into the great saphenous vein through a tiny opening. The catheter then delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy directly to the wall of the damaged vein. As the catheter is removed, the damaged vein is heated and seals shut. Unlike vein stripping, this outpatient treatment is quick and virtually pain-free. Most patients return to normal activity within a few days.
Dr. Kirksey was one of an early group of physicians performing radiofrequency ablation in 2001. He has a long experience in providing state of the art cutting edge treatment in venous disorders.
"I was very hopeful, but I didn't really know what to expect. I thought there would be bruising, but there wasn't bruising. With stripping, I stayed in the hospital for one day, and had to keep my legs elevated. I had scars.
The Closure was much easier!" Ted Jacob, Age 45
The Vein Institute does offer the more traditional yet extremely invasive treatment known as vein stripping. Catheter based mininimally invasive procedures offer many benefits over vein stripping:
- Less invasive; not a surgical procedure
- Faster recovery; resume normal activity within 1-2 days
- Same day, outpatient procedure
- Only local or regional anesthesia needed
- Little to no scarring
- Relief of symptoms
Because vein disease is progressive and has no cure, we recommend regular follow-up visits after every type of treatment.
Endovenous Laser Ablation
Endovenous Laser Ablation is another very effective outpatient treatment for varicose veins. Using ultrasound technology, a thin laser fiber is guided into the vein through a very small opening to deliver pulsed laser heat to the diseased vein wall. This causes the vein to close, and eliminates venous reflux at its source.
Dr. Kirksey is also considered an expert in Endovenous Laser Ablation, and was one of the first in the Northeast to introduce this revolutionary technology as a treatment for varicose veins. Like VNUS Closure™, this procedure offers a variety of benefits:
- Relief of symptoms
- Less invasive; not a surgical procedure
- Little downtime
- Same day, outpatient procedure
- Only local or regional anesthesia needed
- Little to no scarring
Because vein disease is progressive and has no cure, we recommend regular follow-up visits after every type of treatment.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
This technique uses ultrasound technology to guide the precise placement of injections needed to treat larger varicosities. It is extremely effective because the solution is delivered to the exact source of venous reflux.

"It's fascinating that they can take care of this problem without putting a big cut in my leg. It's an easy procedure." M. Smith, 62
There are many benefits to Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy:
Treats problem at the source without surgery
- No downtime
- No anesthesia needed
- Long-lasting results
- Extremely effective
- Minimal change of any scarring
Because vein disease is progressive and has no cure, we recommend regular follow-up visits after every type of treatment.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
The Institute offers this advanced procedure to successfully remove large surface varicosities. During Ambulatory Phlebectomy, the diseased veins are pulled up and delicately removed through very small micro-punctures that do not require stitches. This procedure is often a more efficient way to treat surface veins than using multiple sclerotherapy sessions.
Advantages of Ambulatory Phlebectomy include:
- No stitches
- Virtually no scarring
- Only local anesthesia needed
- Long-lasting results
Because vein disease is progressive and has no cure, we recommend regular follow-up visits after every type of treatment.

Visual Sclerotherapy
This procedure is most often used to treat visible spider veins and small
varicose veins near the surface of the skin. A painless sclerosant is injected into the veins, causing them to shrink, close off and eventually disappear. Although two to five treatments are often needed, the results are long-lasting.
Advantages of sclerotherapy include:
- No downtime
- Less likely to stain skin
- Long-lasting results
- Fewer allergic reactions
- No scarring
Because vein disease is progressive and has no cure, we recommend regular follow-up visits after every type of treatment.
Laser Treatments
To treat very fine surface veins, the Institute offers laser treatments. The laser produces short pulses of light that virtually erase tiny red spider veins without bruising the skin. An average of two to three treatments are generally needed.
Because vein disease is progressive and has no cure, we recommend regular follow-up visits after every type of treatment.
Compression Hose
Although compression hose do not treat the cause of vein disease, they often provide relief from its symptoms by preventing blood from pooling in the leg veins, thereby helping overall circulation. Compression hose also increase the long-term effectiveness of all vein treatments.
